Undergraduate
The Undergraduate Medical Education Team support placements for Medical Students and Physician Associate Students. The team work closely with our main medical school at the University of Sheffield to deliver high quality placements which meet the requirements set out by the medical school.
The wider undergraduate team work together with the aim to provide high quality clinical placements with a strong focus on a positive learning environment. We are dedicated to ensuring students meet their learning objectives and are supported to develop into our future workforce.
We recognise that some students will benefit from additional support during clinical placements and want to ensure that all students feel safe and supported in their clinical learning environment. Where required we work with individual students to tailor support to meet their needs. Our door is always open to listen to the needs and concerns of any student on placement. All of the undergraduate administration team are Mental Health First Aiders. The team is also enhancing their knowledge of neurodiversity to be able to further support student needs.
In providing placements we reference the GMC Guidance on Undergraduate Clinical Placements and the NHS England Safe Learning Environment Charter. We also aim to achieve the trust values of respect, teamwork and diversity.
electives
Barnsley Hospital is only able to provide a very limited number of electives each year. For this reason we are currently giving priority to requests from the main university we work with (University of Sheffield). If your elective is self-funded there will be a charge for this and full details can be provided upon enquiry. When making an enquiry please let us know the proposed elective dates and your preferred department.

Introduction to Medicine
At the present time we are unable to offer any work experience at Barnsley Hospital. However, we do have run a two day course for school and college students interested in a career in medicine. Due to limited spaces this is only for students who live or study in the local Barnsley area. Day one of the course is information sessions and day two is a practical day in our training centre, This takes place in our Education Centre supported by Resident Doctors. Introduction to Medicine runs approximately 4 times a year. If you are interested in applying please do so via the tab below.

Student Common room
The Student Common Room, located in Block 13 opposite the Education Centre main doors, is open 24/7 for all medical students. Access codes are provided in your induction pack. The room includes changing facilities (with £1 coin-operated lockers), computers, a printer, kitchen, lounge, and restrooms. Please help keep the space tidy, especially in the kitchen. Tea and coffee are available, but remember to bring your own milk.
Library
You’re welcome to use the library as a study space or to join as a member during your placement. The library offers computers, a quiet study room, individual study pods, loanable books, laptops, iPads, and access to UpToDate.
Accessible 24/7 with your Ward Access Pass (received at induction), simply scan the grey panel on the Education Centre’s door for entry after hours. Staffed hours are Monday to Thursday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:30 p.m., and Friday, 8:30 a.m. – 4:00 p.m.
To borrow books, iPads, or laptops, please register with the library. Students can borrow up to four books at a time, which must be returned at the end of your placement.
ON-CALL ROOM
Students on Phase 3a Women’s Health, Phase 3a Child Health and Phase 4 OWLS will be allocated some night shifts during their placement. Students who need to make use of the on-call facilities for these shifts can speak to a member of the on-call team for further information and access.

Placement Concerns
We want all students on placement at Barnsley Hospital to feel safe, supported and able to achieve their learning objectives. Any students with concerns should speak up to a member of the undergraduate team as soon as possible so we can support you and aim to rectify any issues you encounter. Your first points of contact are Claire Gaskin and Madelaine Lingard. You may also speak with your supervisor, the Undergraduate Lead in your department or our Associate Director of Teaching. Please let us know promptly if you have any issues so we can aim to resolve these whilst you are still on placement
